Senate Debate on LD 345, An Act to Ensure the Confidentiality of Concealed Weapons Permit Holder Information.
Dear SAM members,
LD 345 was legislation introduced by the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine. The debate was particularly controversial and on several occasions legislators gave speeches and cited arguments against the bill that were inaccurate. In addition, the Press Association and the Maine Civil Liberties Union, (opponents of LD 345) made claims about the bill and SAM’s motives for introducing the bill that were unfair.
Senator Valentino, Chair of the Judiciary Committee gave a thorough and passionate speech about the merits of this bill and why it was so important. Please read her testimony as it will dispel many of the claims made by the Press Association and MCLU. In the very near future we will post the audio record of the debate in the House of Representatives. That debate was particularly harsh and revealed several legislators with an ax to grind against law abiding gun owners.
Footnote* In opposition to the bill Senator Stan Gerzofsky made the claim in his speech that, “If you had reason to believe that you were in danger in any way, all it took was a telephone call. Call up the State Police and say, “I have a concealed carry permit, I don’t want any of that information given out and this is why.” They wouldn’t.
This claim is untrue. According to Major Chris Grotton, Department of Public Safety, there was no way they could do such a thing.

Stand strong on 2nd ammendment
Dear David,
I'm glad to see SAM standing strong on the 2nd amendment and more in line with the NRA. I joined earlier this year, after having left my membership expired for quite some time. I honestly debated whether or not to join, as I haven't always felt SAM's stance was firm enough on the 2nd amendment, but I decided to give it one more chance. After attending some of the hearings, and watching the others that I couldn't be at, I was happy to see your testimony and Jeff Zimba's. Keep up the good work, and the strong pro 2nd amendment stance and I'll keep renewing. I'll also donate when funds allow. I think Jeff will be a good addition to the board of directors, and help represent us well. Thank you, for the hard work you and everyone at SAM is doing.
Thanks,
Tim Grimmel
